Getting a great Realtor should be the first step on your house-buying journey, but for many that’s too serious a step. Most people begin by searching online for what’s available in the area they wish to live, and what the going rate for real estate in said area is. It’s okay, everyone does it, but when you are ready to find a realtor, here are some tips to get you off to a good start:
1. Ask around: Real estate is a customer service driven business when it comes to realtors, and anyone you know who has been through the home-buying process before will be more than willing to either rant or rave about the realtor they used. This is a great opportunity for you to gather a list of names from people you know, of the most recommended realtors in your area. Tried, tested and true is always a great game plan to find a realtor.
2. See if you click: Some realtors are pure salespeople, inside and out. You want someone who you can have an easy working-relationship with, someone who doesn’t pressure you, and who will fight in your corner when the time comes. As the buyer you don’t get direct contact with the seller, realtors are like lawyers representing clients and everything must go through channels of communication. If there is ever a problem, you want to feel that you can rely on your realtor to be aggressive or steadfast if the situation warrants. Find a realtor you feel will represent you well.
3. Google them: This is an easy way to find reviews, discover if they’ve won awards, or to just find out more about them generally. You can learn about the agency they work for, how popular they are in your area and just about anything else that may be pertinent. When it comes time to find a realtor, use all the tools available.
