When it comes to looking for the perfect home, most people look only at the property, not the surrounding area. But neighbourhoods are just as much a feature of a home as almost anything else, so it’s important that you look into where your home is located just as much as the home itself. Here are just a few tips that you can use to evaluate a neighbourhood and determine if the location is right for you and your family.

1. Check Out the Neighbourhood

One of the best things you can do when looking at a neighbourhood is pound some pavement. Especially in the warmer months, simply walking around a neighbourhood can give you a feel for much of what the place has to offer. It can also help you evaluate if the things listed as “within walking distance” are, in fact, close by. You may even meet some locals in the area who can give you some firsthand insight into the area.

2. Head Online

Google has reviews of almost everything, including local shops, restaurants, events, and more. If you’re looking to move to any neighbourhood, it’s a good idea to see what people are saying about the places around. It will let you know what local spots could become your future favourites, and help you figure out if it’s really a place you want to be.

3. Look at Some Stats

The vast majority of neighbourhoods in Edmonton are safe and friendly areas, but some are rougher than others. It doesn’t hurt to look up some stats on crime in your prospective neighbourhood and surrounding areas. If you can, look at things like break and enters, property damages, and theft. If it’s an issue, consider security options or start looking elsewhere.

4. Look at Other Listings

If you’ve found the perfect spot but are still on the fence about the price, look at other listings in the area and compare what you’re getting against those other properties. By seeing what housing prices are like in the area, you have a better chance of getting a more affordable price, or you may get a chance to snatch up a deal before anyone else.

When it comes to looking at a neighbourhood, doing your research can help you evaluate your future lifestyle just as much as the home itself. By doing your homework, such as walking around and looking up reviews of local businesses and events, you can really get a feel for a place. And once you know about the area, you can also consider things like asking prices and more. With the right information on your neighbourhood, your buying process can be much easier, and maybe even a little more affordable.
