Selling your home is a very complicated process. It involves not only a lot of paperwork, but a lot of know how. Many people who sell their homes make at least a couple of the following mistakes and, as a result, have their home listed for longer or get less money than they could have. Here are the mistakes that cost home sellers time and money, and how to avoid them in your own sale.

1. Showing a Dirty, Cluttered Home

At some level, people understand that the home they’re viewing is still being lived in, but that doesn’t mean they’re forgiving of any kind of mess. It’s best to think of your home showings like an interview. You wear your best suit, not the suits you’ll wear when you start the job. The same goes with your home. Be sure to give it a proper tidy and thorough cleaning before any and all showings. It’s a good idea to declutter your home as well before interested parties arrive. Take your non-essentials that take up room and move them off-site, or maybe just simply into the trash. With less clutter, your home will seem bigger and more inviting.

2. Making Things Personal

Decluttering is dreadfully important, but so is helping potential buyers envision themselves in the space. While we love our sentimental photos and keepsakes, sometimes they can be alienating for people who want to buy the home. The point of a home showing is to help people envision themselves in the space. If it’s filled with lots of personal things, it becomes more difficult for them to do so. Grab some of the family photos and keepsakes and move them to storage before any showings. It’ll help buyers think about their future.

3. Forgetting About Curb Appeal

The curb appeal of your home is your first real impression. It’s the point where many people will get a gut feeling, one that will dictate how they think in the rest of the showing. Be sure to take the time to look after the outdoor spaces of your property. Fix the fence, paint the door, or add some planters to make things more appealing. In doing so, you’ll start off every showing on the right feeling.

Selling your home is a complicated process, one that requires time, dedication, teamwork, and the right people. With the right real estate agent, you’ll be able to sell your home faster, and for more money. And if you avoid these mistakes, the whole process could go much easier.
