Ice District is one of North America’s biggest and most comprehensive building projects and a testament to Edmonton’s ability to grow and evolve, even in the current economic situation. It’s become a regular talking point in Edmonton and across the nation, but many people aren’t aware of the actual plans for the area. Here is a breakdown of some of the biggest buildings that will become the mainstays of the new Ice District.

Rogers Place

The crown jewel of Ice District, Rogers Place is the 18,641-seat new home to the Edmonton Oilers, after they spent 42 years in Rexall Place. The new stadium is the centrepiece of the new downtown and will be home to more than just hockey games. The $480 million facility will also be a prominent concert venue. The stadium itself is only part of the facility’s total reach, however. The City of Edmonton is building, according to The Edmonton Journal, the “Wintergarden pedestrian crossing, land, LRT connections, a pedestrian corridor around the facility and a 1,000-seat community rink” to round out the area.

Stantec Tower

Edmonton will soon be home to the tallest building west of Toronto: the 66-storey Stantec Tower. The future home of consulting and engineering corporation Stantec will include 28 floors of office space, with the namesake business being the main tenant, and 481 condos on the top 38 floors. The base floor will feature some retail space as well.

Public Plaza

While many of Ice District’s main pieces are reaching for the sky, the city has been careful to leave some open space for people to enjoy the area. This will be in the form of a public plaza, a 4,600-square-metre open area surrounded by shops, restaurants, cafes and more. A Cineplex will be one of the main entertainment draws on the plaza (besides, of course, the stadium), which will feature five VIP theatres and a licensed lounge.

Ultima Condominiums

While half the size of Stantec Tower, Ultima Condominiums is one of the most-anticipated residential buildings in Edmonton. The 33-storey building will feature luxury condos and an open air skydeck, which includes a hot tub and firepit.

JW Marriott Hotel-Legends Private Residences

Combining a condo building and hotel, the JW Marriott Hotel-Legends Private Residences will give residents the feeling like every day is at a luxury hotel. The 54-storey building will feature a 356-room hotel, a first floor retail space, and the rest in condos. Residents will have access to the hotel pool, room service, pedways to Rogers Place, and VIP access to concerts and events in the stadium.
